well because of platters not being 100% identical servo for each platter is generated individually now.
as for article on what they are using to write servo, it is difficult to come by because manufacturers work extra hard to try to keep a lot of their functions a secret...
what kind of enclosure/manufacturer?
what is the drive inside (make, model etc)
does your bios see the drive at least? (I would avoid booting in to windows with it plugged in if you can for now)
google MHDD, throw it on a floppy, cd or flash stick and run that on it, dos based HDD...
Drives use embedded servo nowadays (weaved throughout all of the platters in between the user tracks/sectors), also only WD and samsung (well, samsung HDD division was bought out by seagate)
only those two manufacturers still use the type of servo writing you mentioned anymore.

you will also potentially have to take file permissions, its not to bad, if it starts giving you messages about not having permission, etc. reply and myself or someone can likely give you the steps to take permissions.

It sounds like my best bet to account for the less efficient heat transfer of the air is to decrease overall ambient temperature, and to direct lower temperature into the intake if possible.

WD desktop drive has a head alignment that has to be managed; once it is opened it's pretty much FUBAR, especially outside of a clean room.
pay ~$3000 now, since it has been opened, or throw it in the trash.
