Well for discovering new metal (or old metal) I use this thread at Head-Fi. And most of the time people post Youtube vids so you can preview songs that way.

Because distortion is awesome! ;) I will agree on the "obnoxiously loud" part though, at least as far as compression goes. Most metal is very fatiguing to listen to, but I still find a way to tolerate it because I like it so much.
