Thanks everyone for the input. I think I'll take nitromullet's advice and put Win8-RP on my laptop just to get familiar with it before putting it on my parent's build.
And thanks for the heads-up on the Win8 keyboards, I wasn't aware of them.
I'm building a new desktop for my parents to replace their aging XP system. I was planning on putting Win8 on it, but I have concerns on if they'll struggle to learn it's new interface.
I don't have Win8 on any of my own systems either so I'm worried if they call me with a question I won't...
Sennheiser makes a headset version of their popular hd280 headphones (which are awesome), but I feel it's overpriced

Near-field monitors will give the best sound quality, but will take up more space than most other desktop type systems. here's some examples:

Seems so. I recently got a new Dell 2209WA and it is sitting next to my 2.5 year old Dell 2007FP. I just calibrated them and the new one is more than double the brightness (190 cd/m^2 vs 90cd/m^2).
To get them to match I have the old one at 100% brightness and the new one at 0% brightness...
Just got mine. Ordered yesterday morning, arrived in just over 24hrs with free 1 day shipping!
Checked with checkeMON, no stuck or dead pixels. No backlight bleeding apparent. This thing is superbright, had to lower the brightness to ~35/100
total was $210 after taxes and fees to California.
Your budget is high enough that I'd skip the WD Raptor and get two SSDs (OCZ Vertex or Intel X25-M) in RAID0 for your applications drive. Don't forget to add a good heatsink, it would be a shame not to overclock that build.
Overall though that seems like a dream build for video editing...
I have that exact model. I got it in July for $80 shipped after MIR. It's a great unit, but I don't put nearly that much paper through it. It's warm up time is very quick, faster than the large Dell unit at my workplace though it's ppm is a bit lower. The scans are fast and easy as are copy...
Ditto what Nuwave said. I used to play on the same network as my roommate back in the Party Poker days and have more recently played on FTP at the same time as others. The poker houses are fine with it, but will not allow you to sit at the same tables/tournaments to prevent collusion.
BTW...
Linksys WRT310N
It works with DD-WRT, but you have to flash the mini version first, then the full version, no big deal.
I'm sure there's others, check the DD-WRT wiki for supported devices.
I have the PC151 w/ the usb soundcard. The sound quality is very good on both the headphone and the mic. You should note that it's description is misleading. Neither is circum-aural. The PC161's earpieces are a bit larger, but they are both supra-aural, and rest directly on your ears...
If you get the Asus P5Q Pro you can save $60. Plus you can get it as a combo with the Asus HD4850 with a $30 combo discount on Newegg in addition to the $30 mail in rebate (bringing it to the same price as a 8800gt).
You can also save $50 by getting the Antec P180 instead, or any other...
Thanks for the suggestions. The Corsair is a good deal, but I ended up going with the PCP&P 750W.
