After reading AnandTech flash drive review and from what eveyone has said I guess not all USB flash drives are equally built smart enough to go from FAT to FAT32. The article shows SOME drives become very slow under FAT32 but not all.
Did you use FDISK to delete the partiition? Those who are interested in changing from FAT to FAT32 would not need to delete the partition just reformat it. I assume you mean In Device Manager the USB device list showed nothing connected - is that right?
Were you using WIN9x, WINXP or other?

The Flash Drive exports a simple block-structured logical unit to the host operating system, so moving from FAT16 to FAT32 is feasable.
