mini itx, flex itx? tiny server computer and where?

Making It Small ~*AND*~ Cheap...? There are some nice Yeong Yang Micro ATX cases in the Tiny Tower (YY-A101 through YY-A107) line, but they are kind of hard to find at reasonable prices. The YY-A106 is available at Directron for $61.99 if you are interested. I also like the Casetek Micro ATX...

    Laptop Emulation Station

Can anyone recommend a particular laptop platform, maybe an older one used or refurbished, for use as a basis for portable emulation? It would be used to run such emulators as KEGA (Genesis/Sega CD), YAME (TurboGrafx-16/TurboDuo) and ZSNES (Super Nintendo). I suppose I would use a USB gamepad...

Which are 1st, 2nd, 3rd "tier" MB manufacturers?

Wow! An excellent question, followed by GREAT answers! Just know this, no matter the "general reputation" of a motherboard manufacturer - all produce occassional lemons. Even if the failure rate is as low as 2%, those that sell more, will appear to have more problems. That is, 2% of 20,000...

onboard vga is such a burden

mechBgon: Excellent! For those who are unaware... FUD - Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt. ie [that means, "as in"]: lies, misinformation and propaganda Peter & nan0bug: Yeah, with a $500 budget one can certainly build a better than merely decent PC. It all depends upon whether or not you are...

    Micro-ATX Woes

minitaz wrote, "Price is the main factor as this machine is used only for surfing and general office applications." If you are absolutely sure of that, and know the systems will NEVER be used for games, take a look at the Biostar M7VIG Pro. HUN-YA! Red Ronin

Shuttle XPC supposed to be quiet but isn't?

There is also the fact you are using an Athlon XP 1700+, which if I remember correctly, actually runs hotter than later CPUs such as the Barton core AMD Athlon XP 2500+. You also have the Shuttle SK41G, which I think is slightly different in configuration from (and thereby perhaps louder than)...

    Good All Around Motherboard?

Any of these should do - Biostar M7VIG Pro, Shuttle MN31N, Chaintech 7NIF2, Biostar M7NCG... There are others, but these come to mind most easily at the moment. HUN-YA! Red Ronin

    my 1.1Ghz NES PC (Mini-ITX)

JoeKew1's work is immensely better, no doubt! The ability to use the PCI slot, the lack of the stupid "bridge" across the middle, the better overall use of space, the precise wire management, the neat assembly bracket for hard drive and optical drive... Sorry no, the other one by Mr. Wasson is...

I would suggest the ECS L7S7A2 might be worth consideration. ;-)

    Small, But Not A PC...

Sorry if this goes too far off topic, guys. I just thought someone might be interested. A friend on a different forum pointed me to this link at Lik Sang, regarding the new product called Treamcast: Mass produced portable Dreamcast available in the streets of Hong Kong - Info and Pictures...
