Decided to go with DriveSavers. The data is irreplaceable.

We have access to the drive obviously, but we don't want to power it on if the heads are in contact with the platters or the bearings are unbalanced. I don't know if there's a way to run SMART or find the status of the drive before the spindle motor turns on.

I'm looking for a laptop that's around $500 with a 14/15" screen. I was considering the SL500 Thinkpads. Any other suggestions? I'd like a Core 2 Duo processor. Integrated video should be ok. Decent battery life would be nice. Nothing needed special in any other category.

I never go to MSN.com directly, but sometimes I check e-mail and when I log out, it goes there. I am almost always treated to one of these idiotic pictures...where and why do they get them? Pic

Things are working well with the eSATA enclosure/card combo - and it's a lot faster than the USB setup I was using. The enclosure is plastic, but seems built fairly well and includes everything needed including USB and eSATA cables.

Thanks the for replies guys. I took the drive out of the Seagate enclosure and decided to order an eSATA/SATA card from Newegg and cable and connect the drive with an external eSATA enclosure. If this doesn't work (as a poster above mentioned), then I'll just use the enclosure to hold the drive...
