Personally, I'd wait for the new IBM processors come out. Why buy something that is going to become the low-end sometime soon? Then again, it's really a gamble...because you probably do not want to wait that long to buy your system. We don't even know when the new chips are going to be standard...

It is unlikely that you will get a virus in Linux, but I use this antivirus scanner: RAV Antivirus. It has a friendly, initiative interface and is easy to use. But you won't likely need it...

I currently use an Inspiron 8200 with a 15 inch display and 1600 by 1200. I find that it's "optimal" resolution actually hurts my eyes. Yet, it looks fine at lower "non optimal" resolutions...

Partition Magic works fine. I havent' had any problems with it. THe only time I've heard of it messing up, is when my friend tried to merge partitions. That ruined his disk. Otherwise, I've resized, added, altered filesystems, and moved partitions flawlessly.
