I prefer partitioning.
As has been said, I can reinstall the OS without issues. I can backup my data more easily.
And if you are worried about the moving target of partition size, there are several utilities that will resize your partitions without loss of data. I use EASEUS Partition...
A question, what happens if you go the Registry Edit (or run the MS utility) and then NOT run AHCI?

Yes, that is right, FIVE THOUSAND DOLLARS for 5 MEGA bytes.
But not as good as the $59.95 each for 1 TB drives I paid a couple of years ago.
I leave my computers on 24/7. I used to turn them off for extended time away from home, but every failure I have had (excepting fans) have been a power on. Not that there have been many. And I have been doing this for some 25 years of having computers in my home.

Are you planning on partitioning the bigger SSD?
If so, just copy the HDD to the partition on the SSD.
If not, you may have to reinstall some programs (typically no loss of settings) or at least change pointers.
Some drive utilities have the ability to "move" programs and pointers.
In Device Manager, under IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers, I have:
ATA Channel 0
ATA Channel 1
Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller
Under Storage Controllers:
Intel(R) Desktop/WOrkstation/Server Express Chipset SATA RAID Controller.
No mention of AHCI.
Manual says only that RAID...
