Overall it would be a decent upgrade. The processer is a good bit faster, so if you encode videos, encrypt files, etc you will notice a marked improvement. The video card is a decent step up as well, so game performance will increase. How much is he offering you the parts for?

Can't be done while keeping the laptop in one piece. Best i could reccomend is a remote desktop situation once an OS is installed and setup on the server.

Cheaper and easier just to switch to FedEx. Costs more than UPS, but its worth it. I stopped using UPS when someone stole my hard drive, re-packaged it, and delivered an empty box to me.
