newbie friendly means different things to different people. try the ubuntu live cd to get an idea of what's ubuntu is like: (http://us.releases.ubuntu.com/releases/5.10/)
not one to video edit, but if you are married to a particular software package, i'm not so sure you'll be happy.
don't...
way back when i tried to burn the recovery cd's on my t42, it never worked quite right (always asked for one more cd to burn even if it wrote only a few megs to the previous cd). i ended up making a ghost image and keeping that.
you can call ibm to request the cd's, but they do charge for...
either novell or redhat simply becuase they have the largest support infrastructures in place, and clearest ties to the server marketplace. linux will only become mainstream once people become comfortable with it in the business world.
i wasn't happy with the routing abilities of my version 2.2 wrt54g. i had to restart it a fair amount of times due to bittorrent. i went back to my linux firewall/router and the problems went away.
since you say this is for school and not for games, you really should look at a pentium-m. i love amd and all, but the pentium-m is leagues better than any amd cpu when it comes to getting the most out of battery life- which is pretty important if you are going to be using the laptop in class...
to expand on what nothinman has stated,
when one says that it's possible to run a windows app in linux, but that is isn't recommended, one means that while it may be possible for some windows apps to run in linux, there is no guarantee that all windows apps will work in linux.
the analogy...
linux is the kernel, what enables an operating system to interact with hardware (and that's it).
The operating system relies upon GNU, and you can read more:

you miss the point. it's an ultraportable. the two primary goals are reduce weight and extend battery life. as batteries get lighter you will need to cut voltage so that the smaller batteries last longer.
you will have to take your laptop out of whatever bag you have it in, and it will be xrayed separately.
i wouldn't worry about this fubaring anything. thousands of peeps have laptops xrayed daily without incident.
early on i just got the impression she worked with jack a lot. there wasn't much definiton of roles early on other than tony, and to a lesser extent michelle. i'd classify her as a midlevel analyst with mad fat protocol skills. not exactly management, but an effient worker.
eh, joey will be off the air by the time they start shooting the next sopranos. i think they wrote themselves into a corner (not that it's a bad corner), in that they needed do progress the fbi-adrianna storyline somehow, and they did it in the logical way.
I'm not sure what you're getting at. you want to turn your window's box into a dual boot machine so that you can run some of your simulations on your home pc? there's another forum, linuxquestions.org that may have some specific answers to some of your questions.
