You could try running one of the demos to see if everything's accelerated.

are two good demos to run. They run in a window and count frames for you. Typically accelerated X will get around 1000fps running these demos while unaccelerated fps counts are around 1-3 hundred...
OK, I just talked to some Uber Guru's here at Sair. We are all interested in your problem. So far, the consensus seems to be that for whatever reason there are no tty's assigned for runlevels other than runlevel 1.
