Advice/Opinions needed: Rewiring my entire network

well, here's the deal with VPN: at school i have to do a lot of work that requires me to VPN into my campus to access resources etc. A few of my campus buddies and i are wanting to set up our own private VPN tunnels between each other so we can each share files directly (and securely), think...

What is the advantage of FTP over HTTP?

HTTP is made to do text (Hyper-text transport protocol) granted it does all other files as well, but it's main purpose was to get HTML code from one place to another as quickly as possible. Ever notice in your FTP connection options how you can chose to download in binary or ASCII? Ever wonder...

Sharing broadband connection over phone line

well, you *should* be able to set up his computer to accept incoming connections, which would allow his modem to talk to a cell phone or whatever, but i'm not sure. A lot of it will depend on his hardware too (most v.90 and v92 modems won't transmit data at 53k, they'll only recieve at that)...

Advice/Opinions needed: Rewiring my entire network

Current Layout: DSL comes in through Verizon's Westell modem, out over Cat5e to my DLink DI514. It connects via copper to my roommate's PC (the modem and router are in his room since his computer has no wireless). In my room i have a DLink DWL810+ bridge connecting to the router, and copper...

I wish for a tablet Powerbook. I'm holding off til probably the end of may or mid-june. if no tablet PBs are announced or hinted at, and no new upgrades (such as dual core G4s) etc. are brought up, i'm going to take the plunge and buy a PB. I really, REALLY want a tablet 'book w/dual core...

Networking our two offices. Have a few questions.

what kind of hardware is already in place as far as networking gear? if you're willing to invest get a pair of routers that will support VPN tunnels and put one at each location put a firewall behind each one (a cheap Cisco PIX would be my choice but even the cheap ones are still pricy) and...

    VPN Router

This summer i may be upgrading my el-cheapo DLink router to a higher class router, preferably one that will allow me to remote into it via VPN to access shared folders, etc., on my internet network. I have been looking heavily at some of Netgear's offerings. My current thoughts are to go with...

    Newegg news on Soyo Rebate

I got all my money from'em. As my previous post stated, my first rebate didn't go through cause i looked at the wrong fine print and that was my fault, not soyos. Overall i'm not considering 4.5 months to be that bad. i've had much worse times from far better companies. The board didn't...

    AV/firewall renew subscription fees

If you know what you're doing you shoudln't even NEED AV software. I run it mostly as a failsafe. I ran without it for a long time, just ran a firewall, and never got infected. Any i didn't know it at the time, but i just found out recently that when i lived in the dorms here on campus i had...
