I have the 480W version with an Athlon 64 and it hasn't given me any problems. It seems like a solid PSU so i would think the 420W version will work out just fine for you.

Does the laptop run properly when you remove the Crucial stick and boot only with the older stick of ram? If so then i would agree with rpbri that the ram is bad.
