    I have experience the same problem with yours which is getting a "validating identity". Usually, you are getting it when the encryption is WEP. What you can do is to change the encryption to WPA mode.

    I know a power line that really works, it is PLTE200 of Linksys. You just need to make sure that they are connected on a same circuit.

    Disabling its DHCP server and wireless is somewhat similar to a switch, connection speed through LAN is still 10/100 mbps.

    That's right. 2.4 Ghz might be noisy but not 5 Ghz. However, 5 ghz has shorter range than 2.4 Ghz.
