    XP MCE install issues

As it turns out... Googling the text of the prompt found me the answer. Because MCE 2005 is built off of SP2, the disk 1 and 2 have all of SP2 in it. The files wanted by installer are back in disk 1. So, install order is disk 1, disk 2, disk 1 again, then the rollup updates on the third...

    XP MCE install issues

OK, some more information. The installer is specifically asking "Please insert the Compact disc labeled 'Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 CD' into your CD-ROM drive (D:) and then clikc OK. You can also clink OK if you want filed to be compied from an alteante location, such as floppy...

    XP MCE install issues

Installing XP Media Center Edition version 2005 on a "new" build (long story). OS comes with three cds: disc 1 and 2 of the "original" 2005 version and a third disc labeled "Updates for version 2005" The install goes fine through disc 1 & 2. Then the installer asks me to insert a disc...

    Problems with a new build

My new system build isn't going very well. In fact, it's not going at all. Assembled the parts and I get some signs of life: system fan runs, vid card fan runs, but CPU fan does not. It twitches a little, like it wants to move, but can't. Fan spins freely by hand, otherwise. No video or...

    Is it my Cat-5 cable

Problem Solved! It was the wiring of the plug. Borrowed a crimper, bought some new RJ-45 plugs, clipped the old and put on a new, with the wiring pattern matching that of the far end. Just found it wierd that the cable worked (and worked well) when connected directly between the computer...

    Is it my Cat-5 cable

Thanks for the link, but yes, I did clone the MAC addy (before and after upgrading the firmware) and I still couldn't get the router to pull an IP address, even with someone from DLink walking me through it 2 or 3 times. I was just wondering whether crossed wires in the cable would make it...

    Is it my Cat-5 cable

I had comcast cable innernets access installed last week. There's about 150' of technician-made cat-5 cable run from the modem, through the basement, to my machine. It works great when connecting those two. When I put a router (DLink DI-824 VUP) in bewteen them, however, I get a limited...

    XP Crash

Well whaddya know! When prompted for sata drivers, I can only see four choices. Although there's nothing to indicate it, I CAN SCROLL DOWN AND SEE MORE DRIVER CHOICES. Right driver, problem solved. Many thanks to those who offered help. The lesson is a familiar one: I'm an idiot.

    XP Crash

Yes, sata is enabled in bios. It was working fine until windows and mcafee did auto-updates and I was prompted to reboot. I think my mobo (abit ai7) has a second sata port so I will try this out tonight. I am skeptical that it is a hardware issue, though, because of the timing of the problem...

    XP Crash

Smilin, I was weak and reformatted. Current situation is this: My Sata drive has first (primary?) and second (extended?) partitions. XP used to reside on the first but I reformatted through windows (see below). The second partition is divided into two logical drives, one of which...

    XP Install

Thanks for pointing that out. I've tried drivers from both the mobo mfg (Abit) and HD mfg (Western Digital) on floppy after hitting F6. Neither allow the win XP CD installer nor the repair console to recognize the SATA drive in any way, shape, or form. This is much different than when I built...

    XP Install

Thanks to everyone that offered their help here. I've given up on recovery and I'm trying to re-install. Here's where I stand. I have a 36gb SATA Raptor that was previously split into two partitions with XP home installed on the first and two logical drives on the second. The first...

    XP Crash

Update: I'm trying to repair the windows installation on my sata drive but I'm humg up trying to access the System Volume Information folder. I have XP home and the NFTS file system, so it appears there's no way to change the access through windows. An MS help article tells me to try using...

    XP Crash

Okay, I have experienced some progress. I didn't do anything different from what I've been trying to do for the past couple of hours, so I don't feel like the progress was "made". Whatever... I have installed windows in my second hd (IDE) and finally am able to see my SATA drive from there...
