Yeah, there's a big ribbon cable and a 4-pin power connector attatched. The ribbon says "CD-ROM" on it, and 42-pins sounds about right.

I don't know what it is. I bought another optical drive and experienced the same problem. Prime95, however, runs fine even in the RAM test mode. I haven't tried Memtest.
