Hory Crap!!!! This bios appears to have made it all better, back in source, full stable, max settings max res my monitor allows (1800x1440) using Beta catalyst 8.7.

Well, I tried putting it in pcie primary mode, with the 2 pcie options on and off, no difference in behavior. System is same level of instability either overclocked or not. I see the crash in Guild Wars immediately upon changing resolution. Steam fails and locks system immediately.

I have the latest modded bios for the SATA2, L2.01, I have disabled the downstream pipeline and request queue. I have even hoisted a separate 500w supply connected to the power connector of the 4850 totally alone. What driver revision is happiest with this card so far in this environment?
