Is there a way to share a wireless connection from my laptop??

Here's the situation: I just moved to a new apartment and it will be about 10 days before comcast and I can work out a time to hook up my broadband. In the meantime, I'm sharing a neighbor's wireless connection (YES, he knows and has consented to this!). This works great for the laptop I'm...

    Question about CD Burning

Thanks, I had considered that, I just didn't want to go get a CD-RW. I think i'll kill a CD-R burning a 10KB file to it a few times just to find out. If the space wasted is over 16 megs or so, I don't think its worth my trouble.

    Question about CD Burning

I'm working on a project where I need to store lots of little files on a CD. I understand that you can write to a CDR multiple times until it is full. My question is how much space do I waste if I am writing only a couple small files per burn? If I burn 10 250KB files intially, I'd imagine in...

AT&T Broadband forcing people to buy extra IP addresses?

Well, I got a letter in the mail that stated exactly that. I would need to pay $4.95 a month for multiple IP's if I wanted them issued to me after August 28th. If i did not pay, my "service could be interupted at any time." My setup at the time of the letter was: Wall to Cable Modem to "8 Port...

    Hard Drives and failure

I was just clicking around on Slashdot today, and I noticed an announcement that Maxtor will be releasing a 320GB hard drive soon. While browsing the comments, I noticed that inbetween all the porn jokes and arguing, the most common theme of the posts seemed to be complaints about backing up...

Using a cable modem connection with more than one computer.

Thanks for the FAQ's ok, So if I go and get a cable router for 80-100 bucks, and hook it up, it will be able to serve me 2 IP adresses even though AT&T wants to charge me for taking more than one? Sounds like a plan.... Is there a lot of setup involved in a router?

Using a cable modem connection with more than one computer.

Well, thats what I've been doing the past 7 months with my AT&T Broadband Cable service. I have two computers on the same desk, and the connection runs from the wall to the cable modem to a 8-port hub, and finally to each of my computers. They each get their own IP address via DHCP, and all has...

    Question about Computers and Power

I see. Thanks for the responses I'm not really prepared to stop doing distributed projects to save a few bucks on the electricity bill, but how negligable is the extra power when multiplied times a month of crunching? would it be like leaving a house lit all night? Or like Just one bulb?

    Question about Computers and Power

I've had this question in my head for a while, and I figure someone here could answer it for me. Do computers draw more power from the wall outlet depending on what they are doing? As I understand from portable electronics, moving parts will run down a battery faster. So I assume having your...

    What is "write combining"?

First, a little background. I'm having the (infamous?) Nv4_disp.dll infinite loop issue in Windows XP Pro. I did not come here to plead for help with it, as I see there are a million other threads in the archives discussing the issue. That said, if there really is a be all and end all fix, I...

    ATT Broadband Question

just to answer your questions, yes both computers are enable for DHCP, and the IP adresses are different. They seem to be fine.. every once and a while the network goes down, but thats been known to happen when one was completely off, so I blame that on the ISP. The Cable modem is one i'm...

    Firewalls --questions from a newbie.

bear with me, I'll get to the questions. I recently bought a computer with WinXP Professional installed, after an lifetime of Win9x use. I never ran a firewall while running Win9x. While configuring things and reading, I came to see that WinXP comes with its own firewall, which they call ICF...

    ATT Broadband Question

Disclaimer.. I'm really an idiot when it comes to networking related things... but... I have AT&T broadband cable internet service and I am not paying them above minimum. I hooked it up to two computers with a "8 Port Mini Hub". I was under the impression that this is not the same thing as a...
