Does the fan inside the case suck air from the case and blow it out the back? Or is it the other way around?

All I have for the E8400 is the stock fan, and I have never overclocked before. Also, I only have 1 case fan that blows air out the back, so I don't really want to mess with things too much. Would I gain that much of a performance boost by overclocking?
