    Which hard drive should I buy for my L400?

    Get the 7200rpm drive. It's worth it. You will notice a difference between 5400rpm and 7200rpm and the 7200rpm drive uses about the same amount of power as the 5400rpm

    Battery Life

    You probably can not upgrade to a Pentium M as the chipset wouldnt support it. Your best bet is a mobile P4 or a P4M cpu. You could always check gateway's website and see what other cpu configs they are selling with the laptop and go from there.

    Hopefully that Dell notebook has a real video card instead of the onboard graphics card of the HP notebooks. I haven't looked at the Presario configuration, so correct me if I am wrong. I have tried to configure the DV1000 though, wasn't that impressed.

    Buying your first laptop can always be challenging. Have you considered an IBM Thinkpad? specifically, a T42. I know they are bit more pricely than the Acer or Emachine, but they are made to last.

    You need to remember the Celerons do not support the speedstep function that mobile cpus have. In other words, your celeron is running at 2.53GHz all the time and takes more power to run at that speed then a pentium M cpu.
