Worked for me! I used to have a p2-400 with a GF2, everything worked fine. Upgraded to a amd 1gz and asus a7v mobo, and was getting random lockups in my games every 5 minutes or so.
Turned out it was the MX-300 drivers. I changed to the last Vortex2 reference drivers, and I no longer have any...
You sure it's not something goofy like one of the game controls is alt-tab or something like that? How about the "windows" key? Are they accidentally hitting it?
I play Tribes alot, and every once in a while I'll hit a particular key combo that will minimize tribes to the taskbar.
Aureal isn't even in business anymore, they got bought out by Creative I believe. Vortex 2 cards aren't really supported anymore. You might as well get a soundblaster.
Just wanted to give you guys a final update, it was definitely my soundcard. I changed the drivers from the Diamond MX-300 to the most recently released Aureal Vortex 2, and now everything is working good.
Well, saturnine was right on track! I didn't even have to remove my extra cards though. I was lazy and just disbled everything in device manager. I disabled my soundcard and what do you know! my movies and games worked.
Tried moving the soundcard into a new slot, no change. Now I'm trying to...

I was reading on here that many people recommend removing the heatsink's thermal pad and using Arctic Silver. It looks like my AMD has a pad. Since I've got the retail CPU, should I change it around, or stick with what they gave me? I don't plan on overclocking in the future either.
