    Synology rs4017xs+ setup/usage

Thanks for the input. It ended up getting set up in RAID 6, but with only a single Gb port being used and it being connected over our office internet network. I think that files are going to be slowly migrated over. It seems I won't actually be using it much as I'll move to a Pegasus R4 over TB2...

    Synology rs4017xs+ setup/usage

Hi folks, and sorry off the bat for the silly questions... The company where I work (TV, commercials, online content, etc.) just purchased the above Synology NAS, fully populated with 8TB Ironwolf Drives and 64GB RAM. (It has yet to be even installed!) Our office now is spread across 2 rooms...

    Desktop Workstation Build

Ok cool. That's what I figured, as all the others looked like they have some extra odds and ends here and there. And I see you've got a nice guide to watercooling in you sig. I'll be sure to give it a look should I end up watercooling this system , which I might very well end up doing to try...

    Desktop Workstation Build

Perfect. Thanks again for your input. I'll take a closer look at 16GB stick prices! Also, aigomoria, any particular recommendation for the Taichi board? It looks like there are quite a few in that model line.

    Desktop Workstation Build

Thanks aigomorla Yes, I've decided against the 7820X. Going for an 8700K, GTX 1070, 32GB DDR4 (4x8GB sticks - memory prices are insane right now!), ASRock Z360 Gaming ITX, an M.2 SSD, and a couple of 2TB WD Blacks as scratch/data disks.

    Desktop Workstation Build

Thanks everyone I didn't know that Superflower made good PSUs. I ended up just piecing together this build here: https://youtu.be/mUSdOLwkP1M ... which is a total cop-out, I know, but I just don't have time to sift through benchmarks these days. Prices on 1080 ti's are pretty much in line...

    Desktop Workstation Build

Hi folks, I should really be doing this myself, but I haven't kept up with the latest Intel releases as well as I should have. I know Ryzen makes a lot of sense in this space, although I'm pretty sure it was overtaken late last year by the latest Intel chips. (But is Threadripper back up...

iMac upgrades worth it? If so, what? - video editing/production

Haha yes! It is a complete mess! And for someone like me, with a little computer/technical know-how, it's quite frustrating. We're in South Korea, and I'm the only foreigner in the office... I was just thinking of the QNAP as a redundant editing device, and not for proper backup. For that I...

iMac upgrades worth it? If so, what? - video editing/production

I was going to RAID 0 a couple HDDs for editing...haha But now, as I keep talking with the bosses, there's more and more talk of future plans. We're a small company that was even smaller for the first couple years. We've grown a lot since the spring, but are still making due with half old/ half...

iMac upgrades worth it? If so, what? - video editing/production

Yikes! What a mis-step on my part! I got so focused on which cameras had Thunderbolt that I didn't even think about USB! Luckily we still haven't ordered anything. I'm looking at the Akitio Thunder2 Duo drives now. Thinking about getting a few of those and using them in RAID 0 as editing drives...

iMac upgrades worth it? If so, what? - video editing/production

We ended up deciding to ditch the oldest Core 2 Duo machine, and got memory upgrades for the rest. Also SSDs, which we'll put into the older, thicker iMacs with the optical drive bays. SSD in the HHD bay, HDD in the optical drive bay seems to be the way to go. And we've got a kid working here...

iMac upgrades worth it? If so, what? - video editing/production

Thanks, dclive i'm just curious as to your reasoning. Is that because the 2009/10 models would benefit more from an internal SSD? Or is it a CPU power choice? The 2011 is still the 'wide-body' model, so I'd imagine the internals are fairly similar. - Late 2009, 3.06GHz Core 2 Duo (E7600) -...

iMac upgrades worth it? If so, what? - video editing/production

Great! Thanks, Commodus. The RAM prices here aren't too bad, so I think we'll definitely do that. Also, I might try my hand at a few SSD upgrades.

iMac upgrades worth it? If so, what? - video editing/production

Well, here I am using Macs for the first time! I work for a smallish TV production company. The team with which I'm working now produces 3 15-minute mini-shows each week. We all use Final Cut Pro X, and so are on iMacs. We have four older units that we'd like to upgrade, but I'm just not...

    NAS for photo/video backup

Keljian - No, I haven't really considered it. I'd just like to get rid of the tower I have and keep thing simple. Getting parts for good prices here in South Korea can be a little tough, and I've really like something that's fairly compact that I can just plug in and forget about. CA19100 -...
