Max compositing performance, movie files or numbered stills?

Hi, For compositing work, is it preferable to have the clips stored as continuous movie files (like avi) or as numbered stills? The reason for asking is that a continous large movie file would likely benefit more from the increased STR of a stripe-set, than lots of small files would. Is this...

QuadroFX - Will Dell, IBM and Fujitsu-Siemens offer it?

Is it likely that the big OEMs like Dell and the others will provide any of the QuadroFX cards as options for their workstations? HP has announced that they will do so, but how about the other vendors? Thank you in advance!

Xeon rig: Dell, HP, IBM or Fujitsu-Siemens?

Thor86, Thanks, that makes sense. Supermicro's Placer boards are awesome, but unfortunately they don't feature fan speed control. edit: Is there a way to view the poll status without skewing the results by voting myself?

Xeon rig: Dell, HP, IBM or Fujitsu-Siemens?

dullard, Thanks a lot for the great info. Did you purchase your second processor separately? Do you know if Dell uses standard Xeon CPUs or some modified proprietary ones? In other words; will Intel's retail Xeons and HSFs fit physically in the workstation? Will BIOS or something else complain...

Xeon rig: Dell, HP, IBM or Fujitsu-Siemens?

If you were to get a dual Xeon Placer E7505 workstation from one of the vendors listed below, which would you choose and why? Feel free to advise against any of the four companies if you have had bad experiences with it (or have heard any horror stories). 1. Dell 2. HP 3. Fujitsu-Siemens 4. IBM...

    Quadro 4 750XGL/900XGL vs. GF4 4600

Rand, Your opinions regarding the Quadro 4 line are interesting. Up until I stumbled over this thread, I was set to go for a 900XGL. Now however, I will rethink that decision. What are your thoughts on 3DLabs' recent line of midrange OpenGL cards based around the P10 VPU? It is targetted at...

    X15 36-LP in Dell's workstations?

Ouch :( If this piece of info is correct Fujitsu is the maker. The 18200MB - Fujitsu Allegro AL-7LX (MAM3367/3184 MC & MP) meets the specs (3.5 ms read & 4.0 ms write), whilst the 36LP differs with a 3.8 ms read. Is there a chance that one might demand to get the 36LP?

    X15 36-LP in Dell's workstations?

I've actually spoken to a guy at their support on the phone already, as well as had an extensive mail-correspondance with another man at Dell. It seems as though they do not know / do not want to reveal which company that makes a particular unit. The link was a comfort in that it tells me...

    X15 36-LP in Dell's workstations?

I see, thanks! The more forums in which I post the question, the likelier I'll get a response. If I get many, I may compare them and take an average of the replies as the truth :) 1) Is the Fujitsu better or worse than the Seagate? 2) Which would you prefer? 3) Is there a way to tell one from...

    X15 36-LP in Dell's workstations?

Hi, does anyone know whether the 15000 rpm U160 HDD that Dell offers is actually a Seagate Cheetah X15 36-LP? Thanks!

SCSI or IDE for optical drives?

Your replies have been very helpful, thanks! I've run this thread in parallell on a few other message boards and the content is somewhere along these lines: 1) I get the impression that Toshiba represents the cream of the crop when it comes to DVD-readers. What are your thoughts on its newest...

SCSI or IDE for optical drives?

    1) I'm about to get a mobo with dual U160-SCSI channels, one of which will host a HDD. I will also buy a DVD-reader and a CD-writer. Should I opt for SCSI-versions and hook them to the second U160-SCSI channel or go IDE and leave the second channel unused? 2) Is it problematic to convert...
