144GB RAM + MOBO Compatibility Question?

Thanks Kevin.. Yes, there is a poing to maxing out the RAM.. I am using the computer for analysis of next generation sequence data.. In short, we are talking about the analysis of 50 million (give or take) 100 base pair reads.. Do the math, but 50,000,000 * 100 letters each is a sh!t load of...

144GB RAM + MOBO Compatibility Question?

I am building a large workstation for scientific computing, and need to double check with the Anandtech experts about hardware compatibility. The system will be a dual socket Xeon 5520 machine with a whole lot of RAM.. Mostly, I am concerned about motherboard-memory issues. ***Mobo: ASUS...

    Mathematics performance and hardware

A little different- but I know when I doing phylogenetic calculations using PAUP/Arlequin my CPU pings up to 50% on my e6600. Seems to indicate processor importance. Matt STD Blog

Is an aftermarked CPU heatsink worth it?

I know that going with an aftermarket solution from Zalman or Artic Cooling will lower the CPU temp- but will I gain performance improvement? I don't OC- and stock cooler keeps CPU in the mid 40's during usage. Would I see a difference in performance with lowering the temp by several...

    Is it normal during SuperPI

As I'm poking around a little, it looks like my problem is (was at this point) related to fan speed. I cranked up the HSF speed and just passed 32M SuperPI simultaneous both cores.. Max temp was 47 degrees which seems pretty reasonable. Orthos blend passed 3 rounds as a prelim test this AM...

    Is it normal during SuperPI

Computer just turned off after a few more minutes- temperatures are too hot.. I checked teh HSF, which is stock intel, reseated, seems to be in there properly. I did not use AS, as I thought it would be OK without. Anybody familiar with the intel HSF- How do I get the thermal pads off...
