The 8RDA+ is SS capable. That is the key distinguishing feature. Whether you use an optical connection or not, the sound on the 8RDA+ is still better than on the 8RDA.
I have owned the MSI board... it is pretty solid with some decent overclocking tweaks. If you get the MSI board make sure you flash the BIOS before you install any O/S and software. The microcode on the USB 2.0 has changed.
If you have a Win 98 or ME startup disk I would suggest to reformat the drive using the startup disk.
You can use the Win XP CD and do a full format of the hard drive as well.
With a 400Mhz P4, the P4X333 would be faster. Most of the P4X266A and 333 reviews I have read have stated the inability to get the FSB to 133Mhz and beyond. The is a huge problem!

For the average user... there is really little difference between all the chips. I have used both onboard and PCI ethernet cards and find it very hard to tell the difference.
