Question Win7 PC Suddenly Fails POST

That's useful info - I was trying to remember if I had to change that setting myself. On my other Win7 PC with another Gigabyte MB I have a full WinXP installation set up for dual boot. But the hassle of swapping the settings from AHCI to IDE for that, then back again and other unavoidable...

Question Win7 PC Suddenly Fails POST

If you Google CMOS battery failing symptoms, as said earlier, you can find plenty of reports dating back years that it can affect the PC start up and often prevent it from booting. Numerous cases too where simply replacing the battery fixed the problem 100%. In my case the fact is the CMOS...

Question Win7 PC Suddenly Fails POST

Repair install of Windows can only be done if you can log in to your account and as I can't do that as it is failing the POST it would have to be a fresh install. That is my worst case scenario.

Question Win7 PC Suddenly Fails POST

I think I know what the problem is I just want to check what will happen when I apply the 'fix' as I've never had to do this before. This bit is just for informational purposes really:- Win7 Pro GA Z77 MBoard i5-3550 16GB Kingstone RAM MX500 SSD primary drive. Symptoms: with no previous...

    Question Problem Bios

Obviously that was the issue in the OP's case - it is indeed asking for trouble. But official BIOS updates may still cause problems too. So I think that advice, that was impressed on me when a complete noob by PC experts long ago, still holds good.

    Question Problem Bios

Another example proving the old advice about BIOS flashing which is simply not to do it unless there is something seriously wrong with the original BIOS or it is missing a feature you desperately need which the new BIOS will give you. A harsh lesson in this case and you can't help but empathize.

    Question New build won't post

Amazed the backwards CPU or the MB was not damaged and so pleased to read that the problem was actually so simply resolved once the mistake had been noticed.

Question PC starting by no screen

More info needed: precise model, graphics card, CPU, Windows version etc and, if applicable, how it is connected to the monitor. A typical and simple cause of something like this in an old PC would be the graphics card has been removed or is now faulty. Assuming it is a desktop the obvious...

Question My HDD spins but is not Detected

What HDD connection type? HDD and enclosure details? Unlikely you're using eSATA but some MB BIOS that I have require you to enable eSATA which is off by default. If USB I'd test it with a different (if possible non-USB 3.0) port, different HDD housing and cable and/or a different HDD because...

Question Can boot into BIOS but not windows on HDMI

I was just thinking that an obvious first thing to do when confronted with any display issue is to see if the problem remains when you exclude the GPU. Test the HDMI output from the MB and if the trouble persists then at least you've excluded the GPU as being involved. But I've now read back...

Question Can boot into BIOS but not windows on HDMI

Couldn't it be a GPU issue? Some of the problems, particularly the desktop icons slowness to display, sounds like it could be involved.

Question Which SSD would you recommend for reliability foremost over speed etc?

No experience with NVMe yet although I have a 1TB FireCuda waiting for me to start the PC build I've been delaying for months. My experience is all with SATA SSDs and like notposting I've had great reliability from the Crucial MX range.

    Solved! Quiet 4-pin fan

That looks like a generic standard mount 4-pin fan; can't guess what the size is from the pic. Are you sure the PC is a HP Elitedesk 400 G8 because a bit of cursory searching on the fan size/replacement parts doesn't bring up any information about a model with that particular designation...

    Question Constant Errors after Upgrade

"Once you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, no matter how improbable, must be the truth." Reading back you seem to have tried testing everything including the MB so, as tcsenter suggested, isn't the CPU the only thing left as the possible culprit? Unless I've missed it isn't that the...

Discussion The perils of owning a case with vents on the top

I have metal or nylon sheet 'dust' filters on both my top case vented PC but you still get a lot of fine dust entering that way. Of course I realised that would not save the PC from liquid incursion of any type, including cat drool and urine, so I got rid of my cats (JOKE). Seriously though...
