Yowsa! Apple Power Mac G5 specs: Dual G5 2 GHz with PCI-X and 1 GHz bus - $2999 and faster than dual Xeon 3.0 GHz.

Yes, I unfortunately have to run WinXP Pro from time to time. *sudder* I've only been a Mac Switcher for less than a year, before then I was a PC user/owner. I had no idea how much better life is on the "Lightside". And I only made that comment in reference to his. Look farther down on my post...

Hi Eug. Guess I'll be posting here since MacNN is down... :P Uh, no. It'll be $2999. That's with Dual G5 2GHz and all the trimmings. Not a better editting station can be had for even close to that price, on ANY platform. Did I hear someone say "Crapple"? Grow up. You're assuming that...

trading my dell for an ibook?

Uh, yeah... right... :P I get 80+FPS in UT on my Powerbook @1024x768 with all the visuals maxed out. For a notebook that's just SO slow. Again, my advice to you is the same as it was for the other guy... PLEASE, please, stop drinking your bong water!

trading my dell for an ibook?

BTW, if you have any questions about Macs head to MacNewsNetwork. It's a Mac forum, with almost as much activity as AnandTech.

trading my dell for an ibook?

I do own one, I'm typing on it as we speak (my PB 12 "AlBook"). It's, by far, the most stable system I've ever owned. Aside from it being a more than adequate "hand-warmer" (it gets a little too hot for my taste when it's really crunching), it's fast and stable and far more useable than the Win...

trading my dell for an ibook?

isaacmacdonald, You've got to be kidding... I've worked with PCs and Macs for over 15 years and the new Powerbooks/iBooks are among the most stable/quality notebooks ever made (especially when used with OSX 10.2+). Beta machine? Beta OS? PPBBPPPTTT!!! :P Stop drinking your bong water.

    OSX on original imac?

Yes, it'll run fine on the original iMac, the Bondi Blue 233MHz, and the "5 color" models which came out soon there after. In fact, I had one on my bench today and it surprised me with how "snappy" it ran (it had 640MB). Just load that system up with RAM, 512MB+, for best performance.

    which laptop to buy?

Apple, either the PB12 or 15... though the 15"ers are getting a face-life in the next month or so.

Talk me out of buying an Apple

I have one of the new PB 12"ers (I'm typing on it right now), and it truly is a sweet piece of hardware... but it does have some cons. <gasp!> A Mac user critisizing his Mac?!?! ;) 1.) It gets a little warm, not HOT, just fairly warm. Apple says it's not a big deal, and it only happens when I'm...

saw the 17" powerbook at work...

Ummm... Ithink you're referring to the TI PBs, the new PBs are in brushed aluminum cases. You can scratch em all you want, just take some steel wool and smooth it out. The first TIs did have those issues though, but it hardly affected their durability, just their cosmetics... and their hinges...

Slot Loading CD/DVD drives in Laptops? When?

I would imagine it has to do with price. Tray loaders, I would imagine, are more problematic due to the potential of the tray breaking off or getting damaged, but that's my assumption.

I have the cash in hand, what do I buy?

A Powerbook 12 w/ a Superdrive and 640MB of DDR. ;) If you must have a PC, then I'd say go with the T40. It seems to be the best in that range.
