    USB key sub-systems

Hi all, I need to find out how the internal systems in a USB key work. i.e. the memory controller, the USB controller and the IO controller between them. The reason for this investigation is that out of 10 different USB keys I have ranging in size from 16MB to 2GB, only 2 of them will boot...

NE1 booting up with USB keychain/jumpdrive?

While it is possible to do this, it is not practical. The flash memory used in a USB key has a finite number of read/write operations that can be performed before the memory becomes unusable. While this number is in the millions, when you put an OS onto the key that performs thousands of...

NE1 booting up with USB keychain/jumpdrive?

The partition on the key has to be active. Use Fdisk to remove the partition, reboot, fdisk a new partition, format /s and then you are good to go. If it does not boot after that, then you have a bios/usb key controller issue.

Bootable USB keys (continued due to lock of unknown origin)

The problem does not seem to lie in the Host USB to Device USB bus interface, because all the keys enumerate in the same way. The issue lies somewhere inside the key. For example, I can fdisk (and set the partition active) and format /s the key after booting with a Win98 boot floppy. The key...

Bootable USB keys (continued due to lock of unknown origin)

Hi all, Peter, thank you very much for your post. You are the only one to have touched upon the topic of my question. I am not simply asking about a BIOS supporting USB; I need to understand the architecture of the USB key - the USB interface, the drive controller, the memory I/O etc. This is...

    Bootable USB keys

Hi all, I am looking for some technical documentation on the USB key design requirements for the key to be bootable. I am also looking for a utility to format a USB key as a bootable device. Do any of you have any experience in these areas? Any help is very greatly appreciated. Cheers. Lost...
