I ended up upgrading the ASUS P5K bios by booting from the ASUS DVD it came with! Then using the downloaded latest bios on a floppy (and latest flash tool) upgrading from the floppy drive. I could NOT get the embedded flash utility in the bios to recognise the .tom file on a floppy - een though...
