It could be a motor problem or an airflow problem. That "whirring" sound is the drive trying to spin up that could be symptom of a bad motor. The other reason might be there is an airflow problem. The inside of a drive needs a certain amount of air pressure to enable the heads to "float" above...
Software isn't going to work. Your going to have to take it to a data recovery professional. You could try the freezer trick, it will work if it's a heat issue but if it's a head crash you're in trouble. I tried CBL data recovery in the past and they were able to save all of my data...
