Motherboard died on my Ubuntu machine.

Replaced my AMD mb with an Intel i7 mb running Ubuntu 64 bit linux. Didn't have to change one thing. Everything worked perfectly.

Benchmark DAC-1 USB DAC Shipping - PENDING

You've got a constitutional right to spend your money and enjoy it as much as you like. I think you could have done much better. Emotiva electronics are loved by many: http://www.emotiva.com/ Salk speakers are high-end for medium money. Much, much better than B&W or Polk. The Focals you have...

Thinking about going from sealed to ported sub to gain about 5db

Yep, those look like they should work. On the other hand, you are not a 16 year old teenager who might turn the amp all the way up, and add some bass boost. If you listen to your car system at moderate volumes and are not addicted to bass-heavy electronica music, you should be fine without...

Thinking about going from sealed to ported sub to gain about 5db

Looked closely, that that Kenwood driver has 15mm xmax - usually the limiting factor. I say go for. If you don't like the ported box for some reason, you can always drop it back in the sealed box. One tip - ported systems have no "resistance" below the port Hz, so you might want to use a high...

Ubuntu server, can't ssh to non-standard ports from external address

Wireshark is your friend. Load it up on the Windows 7 host and watch the traffic come in from the router. If that's ok, load it up on the Ubuntu VB guest and do the same thing. On Linux, you can also use "tcpdump" for a quick diag. chances are that it's incoming packets that are failing, not...

    Breaking a software RAID mirror

It's easy to break a Raid mirror - a much, much better way is to copy the data off to an external drive while the raid is still running

Suggest a Desktop Environment and/or customizations

Not really Ubuntu, but you might want to take a look at MacPup, a Puppy Linux derivative with a Mac like desktop. Me, I'm going a different way - XFCE4 is my desktop.

    Grub2 trashed. How to fix?

Agreed. Unfortunately, don't have much of choice with a laptop.

    Grub2 trashed. How to fix?

I little too "soft and fuzzy" answer for me. Grub2 is evil, fixing it typically involves black magic. Had numerous troubles with it. Recently, my laptop Grub2 started refusing to find my Win7 partition. Reinstalled os-prober, waved some chicken bones at it - no progress - finally grabbed the...

help loading raid configuratoin from live CD

Red Squirrel is right. Happened to me a few times. If the live CD you are using does not have the raid and mdadm stuff built in, you will need to (For Debian systems) "apt-get install mdadm", then start mdadm, then finally "assemble an existing raid".

Netflix? Sorry wasn't sure where to post :)

I upgraded my NetFlix streaming box (cheap Sony media player) from 100Mb switch to a 1,000 Mb switch, and most NetFlix vids started playing in HD. As far as I know, my WAN cable modem speed or parameters did not change.

what current printer is linux compatible?

Needed a new laser, and got this HP 1102 from NewEgg. Plugged the USB into my Ubuntu 12.04 system which said "you've got a new printer" and 5 minutes later I was cranking out pages fast. No problems, no configuration, clicked on "ok" 2 or 3 times.
