Hard drive fried, a few questions

A few days ago, my computer booted up *extremely* slowly. When I rebooted, it forced me to run chkdsk, which found a ton of errors on my D partition, and after that it wouldn't boot at all. I've used the Ultimate Boot CD to check things out, and it appears that there are a ton of file errors...

Radeon 9800 XT $880 Good price???

Given the prices you quoted, I might recommend the 9800 np at less than half the price of an XT. (Make sure it's a regular 9800, not a 9800SE, though.)

New 3dmark03 patch - nVIDIA cheating ... again???

This "lowered Universal Compiler performance" excuse is utter crap. If you run the same 3dMark 3.3 -> 3.4 test on the 45.23 or the 44.03 NVidia drivers, you get similar drops in performance, and neither of those drivers contain the vaunted "Universal Compiler". Unless "Universal Compiler" is...

Which is more powerful - 9700 pro or 9800 non-pro?

Sorry, I meant 9800 non-pro, which is generally priced around the same as the 9700 pro. The 9800 pro is a little out of my price range at the moment. It sounds like the 9800np is a better buy. Thanks!

Which is more powerful - 9700 pro or 9800 non-pro?

I'm considering upgrading my video card, and the 9700 pro and 9800 pro are among my options. They both seem to be around the $250 range when available - which card is a better buy? I'm not currently planning on overclocking.

Palos Verdes, CA - 60-80% off shoes @ The Walking Company

They still do the Street Fair, as far as I know - at least as of two years ago. Sadly, I didn't find it as good as I remembered; I suppose I'm just more jaded and worldly now. I did run into the family of a high school friend, which was nice. Back on topic, though - The Walking Company must...

Little confused about all the ATI models of 9800, a little help please

So just to clarify: 9800 SE = overclocked 9600 Pro 9800 = underclocked 9800 Pro Is that about right, or am I missing some nuances?

Please help - machine fails to boot

Thanks for the help, everyone. It turned out to be the video card - I found an old PCI SIS card lying around, stuck that in, and it fixed the problem. Sort of. Now it boots, gets to the "Loading Windows XP" screen, and then stops displaying anything. It seems to respond to keyboard commands...

Please help - machine fails to boot

Is there any easy way to test that without access to another stick of RAM? If not, I guess I can head to some repair shop tomorrow and ask to try a known-good stick.

Please help - machine fails to boot

I had a power surge - not sure how it happened, maybe I kicked the UPS? Anyway, the machine quickly lost and regained power several times over the course of a few seconds, and when it finally came on for good, it fails to boot at all, and begins to beep. This is the first system I've built...
