The main problem of SoC is testing....you're increasing integration, but you've got less primary inputs/outputs, which leads to a higher testing/verification time.
Um, sounds like you're building a cluster. It's a little more complicated than this. What kinda of interconnection topology (network) are you going to use? You have to make sure that your interconnection network has enough bandwidth to support the amount of communication (processing) you want...
I think you're right on both points. All memory transactions have to go through the FSB/North Bridge. There are embedded uP's that have integrated memory controllers that have a direct link to memory.
I got rejected to Cal Poly SLO too. Ended up going to UC Davis and majoring in Computer Engineering. Now I'm going to grad school at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign (consistently ranked #5 in ECE). Cal Poly can kiss my ass. ;)

I just upgraded my system to a KT266A Shuttle AK31 and I stuck in my old 3Com 900 TPO 10baseT PCI card in it and my internet connection is noticeably slower than when I had my laptop connected (which had a LinkSys PCMCIA ethernet card). I haven't used the 3Com 900 TPO card on this network...
