    WinXP slowdown over time

When you first install WinXP, boy is it snappy. Then after a year or so of installing applications, games, Visual Studio, Sql Server, Anti-virus, etc. etc., my machine is an order of magnitude slower when booting. It also seems to be hitting the disk quite a bit after booting which slows...

why does xp boot faster than 2k?

One other thing XP does is it brings up the desktop while network connections are still connecting/loading/initializing. Win 2000 had to do all the networking stuff before you saw the desktop.

    Antec SLK3000-B case $29.82 new ($17 s/h)!

Hi Joe. It has a CPU duct built into the left side panel (left as in you're looking at the front of the case). This passively pulls air into the case onto the CPU to cool it. It has a telescoping duct that you can pull out to sit right over your CPU/HSF. Other than that, I don't remember any...

ATI Radeon 9550 128MB AGP 8x 64-BIT? Video Card with DVI, 58.99 shipped!

If you're talking about the MSI, watch out. The picture shows a card with a passive heatsink. The MSI site and damn near every other site in Froogle show a card with a fan. I don't know which is right. I'm going nuts trying to find a cheap 5550, 128 bit memory bus, VGA/DVI, passive...

ATI Radeon 9550 128MB AGP 8x 64-BIT? Video Card with DVI, 58.99 shipped!

So is it 128 bit or 64 bit? I have heard you can tell by how many memory chips there are. 4 chips is 64 bit. 8 chips is 128 bit. This card shows 4 chips, but there easily could be 4 more on the other side. Also, 3btech.net shows pretty well in resellerratings.com.

Problem with Geforce 6600GT on two monitors

Cool, I will look at Ultramon.

Identifying memory bus width on Geforce 5200 cards

A Zalman would be another $35. On top of $105 for the 9600. This is for a server that just sits in the corner and hums away. I have another computer with a 6600GT for games. So I really don't need a lot of power for this server's card.

Identifying memory bus width on Geforce 5200 cards

OK, I will look into the Radeon 92XX cards... I actually just sold a Radeon 9600 pro that was in the machine. It has a fan and I don't need that much power.

Problem with Geforce 6600GT on two monitors

Yeah, it should work somehow. Glad to hear you have confirmed that it can work. I'll go home and pound on it some more. I know there are some utilities that let you set 2000 (!) different options that might get me there (Powerstrip, etc.). But I wanted to at least try with the stock drivers.

Identifying memory bus width on Geforce 5200 cards

I did look at 4200's. They are faster, though DirectX 8.1 or lower. I even thought about putting a passive cooler (Zalman, etc.) on a 4200. But then I'm spending $40-$60 for a card and $35 for a cooler. I can deal with the relative puny-ness of the 5200 as long as it has a 128 bit...

Problem with Geforce 6600GT on two monitors

At home, I have a 22 inch CRT running at 1600x1200 and a 17 inch LCD that natively can do 1280x1024. I want to run my desktop across both monitors. I do this at work with an older Radeon card. It shoots 1280x1024 to the 19 inch CRT, and 1024x768 to the 17 inch CRT. Each monitor runs at...

Identifying memory bus width on Geforce 5200 cards

Hi all. I am in the market for a Geforce 5200 card with a passive cooler. I want this for my server at home that stays on all the time. My needs are: 1. Silent (passive cooler) 2. VGA/DVI outputs 3. 128 bit memory bus width 4. Cheap (~$50) 5. AGP I know this card is not going to...

    Antec SLK3000-B case $29.82 new ($17 s/h)!

It comes with one 120mm fan with a hi/med/low RPM switch. It is reasonably quiet at low speed. This fan is installed in the back of the case.

    Is this a decent PSU?

I have been inordinately pleased with Seasonic power supplies. You pay a little more, but they have good amp ratings, and are QUIET. I don't think they have modular cables yet though.
