Our company system crashed, but luckily we had a recent backup using lonetar. The problem that I had reinstalling UNIX was that when I reinstalled the unix os with lontar on the new server, the SCSI adapter was different than the first server. The system would not boot.
I read everything I...
The VPNs that spidey07 was talking about all have to do with remote access. What is it that you would like to do with your remote access? Go from home to work? work to home? friend to friend? How important is security? do you have a router?
Try this site for some info on remote access...
Everyone is correct about the TCP port 1723 and GRE 47, but I also had to open UDP port 1701 on my router to forward VPN requests to the server. It works, so I am satisfied with keeping that way.
Good luck with the VPN. It was a frustrating experience for me. I do have a working VPN now...
I would agree with Technosnob, if you already spent the money, might as well use it. I have had only a handful (out of hundreds) of harddrives go out on me in the last 5 years. My point was, don't spend the money if you don't have too. RAID is really a business solution.
I have setup several...
I do understand about RAID 0, I just don't think that the average user will benefit from it and may actually be taking a risk by setting it up.
The Following is from an article about RAID on Tom's Hardware site:
"RAID 0 is by many not seen as a real RAID level, because it does not add any...

A RAID works well on a server for the following reasons:

1mbps is too slow. Can you check your cable or nics on another machine? My guess is that there is a problem with the cable.
As far as getting 100mbps on any system, regardless if you are using a hub or a switch(at full duplex) you will only get 100mbps under the best situation, and never full...
It is true that Intel has an advantage on AMD in the Multi-processor systems. But for the price of a multi-processor intel setup, you could build 2 AMD servers, and divide the networking tasks between them, or subnet them.
Anyway, a multiprocessed system is really needed for an application...
I don't have Win98 anymore, but if I remember correctly... I think it is only on Win98SE.
Go to the "add/remove programs" in control panel
Go to the add windows components tab.
I think it is either in the communication section or the networking section there is a "VPN...
Windows 98 Does have a VPN server program. You need to intall it manually. However, there are so many shortcomings with the program, that you will be better off trying with W2K. I sounds like you are trying to use a 3rd party program like Checkpoint. If you are, you will need both the server...
