Moving RAID5 array from old, dead computer to new system.

Just googled it. Certainly sounds like the sort of thing I'm looking for. I won't be able to try it until the new system shows up, though. (It ships out next week; I'll probably get it sometime the week after.) In the meantime I'm on an old laptop. Honestly, though, I'll probably just...

Moving RAID5 array from old, dead computer to new system.

As luck would have it, back when I built my system I also built a nearly-identical one for my father, using the same mobo. Unfortunately it's in Maryland, while I'm in NYC. Guess it might be time to pack a bag full of HDDs and backup software, and hop on a bus...

Moving RAID5 array from old, dead computer to new system.

I've been pretty out-of-the-loop on hardware lately; does Nvidia even make nforce controllers for new CPUs anymore? I'm only just getting started looking at new system options (the old one died last night), but I'm only seeing nforce MCP's on LGA775 boards. Am I definitely screwed without an...

Moving RAID5 array from old, dead computer to new system.

The mobo on my computer just bit the dust. Since the computer was relatively old, I've decided to buy or build a new system, rather than deal with replacing the mobo on the old one. I'm curious about the sort of trouble I might run into while moving the hard-drives, though. My storage drive...

TV condensing 5.1 signal to 2-channel. Need some sort of switching solution.

Trying to avoid a manual switch. I got a programmable Harmony remote a few months ago, and it seems like a waste if I have to get up and walk across the room every time I want to change A/V sources. That HDMI switch is basically perfect, though. Thanks!

Making the leap to RAID after my latest HDD failure. Got a few questions.

Understood! See my reply above, where I mention dropping some of my RAID plans in favor of a 3TB external back-up drive.

Making the leap to RAID after my latest HDD failure. Got a few questions.

Okay, so here's what I'm thinking now: Still going with the RAID 5 array for the storage drive, but rather than building an array for the OS drive, I'll just be getting a single high-performance drive and spending the saved money on throwing two relatively-inexpensive 1.5 TB drives into a...

TV condensing 5.1 signal to 2-channel. Need some sort of switching solution.

Here's my situation. Instead of a proper surround-sound receiver I have a Panasonic all-in-one home theater system with a built-in DVD player. Unfortunately, the thing only has one optical audio input. My TV, a Samsung LN40B630, has a whole mess of HDMI inputs and an optical output. So I...

Making the leap to RAID after my latest HDD failure. Got a few questions.

My storage drive, a 750GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.11, bit the dust recently. While doing diagnostics I realized that my OS drive, a 500GB Barracuda 7200.10, is showing some worrisome SMART values, and should probably get replaced soon as well. The inconvenience and expense of sending the...

Which Ubuntu distro for eeePC 1000?

I'm planning on getting an eeePC 1000 in the next few days and installing Ubuntu on it. Doing a little searching, it looks like there are several flavors of Ubuntu that have been customized specifically for the eeePC. I've found Ubuntu Netbook Remix from the official Ubuntu site, Easy Peasy...

    Anyone still play Battlefield 1942?

Look around the EA website. I know that when I realized I had lost my BF2 cd-key, I went searching on the site and found out that I could send them one of the CDs, and like five bucks, and they would send me a new key. I don't remember where exactly on the site that was, though.

    worst bloat ware

Not the worst offender in terms of "absolute bloat," but whenever I think of bloated software, ACDSee image-viewer is the first thing I think of. A few years ago, the major selling point of this software was that it was super light, simple, and fast. Every subsequent version, though, has added...

What's the nicest thing a teacher/boss/professor has ever said to you?

I've had a few good ones: In college I got a paper back with "near-perfect paper!" written on it. I found this particularly amusing since the paper was an essay on the aesthetics of home-made bong construction. (Here if anyone's interested) In a high school math class I once was called on...
