I already have Knoppix and that was my plan. Problem is, my CD and DVD burner don't work. I posted a topic about that a couple weeks ago but didn't get the problem resolved. So I have no way to back up data.

I don't understand how this became such a disaster in the first place. All I did was try to reinstall Windows XP; this shouldn't have happened.

It's very important that I do not lose any data on my hard drive when I do this. Will anything bad happen if I try to install XP with the boot disks?

Bumping this thread to see if I can get some help!

The DVD drive is on the top, it is set as the master. The CD drive is on the bottom, it is set as the slave.

I tried to burn a CD with the CD-RW drive, and got some kind of EIDE error as it went to burn. Tried another disc, same problem. Tried to burn a CD in the DVD+-RW drive, same problem. Same error every time. I saved the error log somewhere but now I can't find it, and I don't want to waste...

It used to say 400, and now it says 200. And I checked the manual, I can't find instructions on how to do this. I was hoping for someone who has had a similar experience to help me out.
