    Actually there are times when you can see when a chip has fried (have seen a few go), just look for a burn mark on or under the chip.

    HP Deskjet 840C for $95 ($90 off retail)

    Be advised that these HP 840 series printers use ink cartrages that are half full and cost about $5 more retail than if you were to go with something like the 882 or 932.
