The 256 will be way faster. I was checking a friend's GeForce 2 MX for compatibility in my mobo (he wanted to buy the same motherboard) and I ran 3dMark2000. I got 3750 with the GeForce 2 and 6127 with the GeForce 256 DDR. So it's definitely faster. Rest of the system is Athlon XP1600+/MSI...

Yep - I have no fans on my motherboard at all (apart from the one attached to the CPU of course). Runs fine.

I have a K7T266 Pro2 (VIA KT266A chipset) if that's any help - If you don't have a processor installed at all, you won't get anything. If you do have a processor installed and are still not getting anything - not even LEDs - then I'd guess your motherboard is indeed dead, or the power's not...
