The 256 will be way faster.

I have a K7T266 Pro2 (VIA KT266A chipset) if that's any help - If you don't have a processor installed at all, you won't get anything. If you do have a processor installed and are still not getting anything - not even LEDs - then I'd guess your motherboard is indeed dead, or the power's not...
