You're right. As a biologist I have no right to be offended if someone says the world is flat, or is 6000 years old, or is made of creamy nougat. Those are all claims that have nothing to do with my discipline.

thanks for your replies. i went digging in the BIOS and sure enough, there was an option under advanced configuration having something to do with USB. i have no idea what it did, but enabling it fixed the problem. i have to hand it to the rocket scientists at DFI who decided to disable USB...
i'm just trying to boot into the winxp installer to reformat my hard disk and reinstall windows. in the BIOS i've set the CDROM to be the first boot device, and when the comp boots up, it faithfully starts to boot the winxp cd. however, when it loads the message "press any key to boot from cd"...
