The thing has been shutting down fine for 6 months now. I haven't changed anything in the BIOS settings. Unless the Win98 shutdown patch is bundled into the Win98 Update packs on the MS website, I haven't installed it. But then why OK for 6 months and just now it starts acting up?

Thanks for the responses. I thought the BIOS might be responsible. But since the Promise scan detected and reported the drive correctly (at least on the screen) I wasn't sure. I'll try flashing back as you suggested and see if that does it. Any ideas what might not work right in 1004D rather...

Thanks for the suggestions. I have the ATA100 as the first item in the boot sequence. I have the ATA100/SCSI or SCSI/ATA100 order set to ATA100/SCSI. And I have the Boot Virus Protection disabled. So it looks like none of those ideas will help. But thanks! Any more things I should check...
