Another way is to create a shortcut on your desktop, and enter this as the target "%windir%\System32\tscon.exe 0 /dest:console" no quotes.
When your done with your remote session just double click the shortcut and it will bring you back to the console no need to login.

The first disk is the Windows installation disk and the second disk is the service pack 2 disk.
During the install it will ask for the second disk.

Try this
Open windows explorer- tools-folder options-view tab-under advanced settings, uncheck automatically search for network folders and printers.
Then delete the network places you don't need.

I would find out the ip address of the desktop pc, then go to the laptop click start, run,
and enter the ip address you just got from your desktop in the following format \\ip address then hit enter.

How do you have your computers networked?
Can you ping each of the computers?
Do each of the computers have valid ip addresses? in the same range?

Did you install all the updates and service packs?
Had the same problem here. System was xp pro sp2 and some updates.
After the repair the system was xp sp1 (slow startup)
so I updated the system and it was back to normal.
