Meraki MX64 or Sophos UTM9 or Pfsense

I run Sophos UTM 9 myself with a gigabit internet connection (Google Fiber), and it works great. The PC I'm using is a five year old i3 (I forget which exact model). Only time I've seen any slowdown is with IPS/Filtering/etc turned on while downloading from Steam or similar game download...

Is an MMO on an SSD a good idea?

I ran World of Warcraft off of my SSD for several years, and I have yet to have an SSD die of overuse.

nVidia drivers - no more DTS-HD or Dolby TrueHD?

I wish I had one; the 4K thing makes this impossible right now though. They don't sell a converter that does DP 1.3 to HDMI 2.0. One is announced, but that's it. I might have to drop 4K until things mature more here, depending on what's going on with the nVidia drivers.

nVidia drivers - no more DTS-HD or Dolby TrueHD?

This is what I'm hoping, but they have 3 newer driver releases, and it happens in all of them, which worries me. Also, the drivers I'm using apparently have a DXVA bug in them. If I enable DXVA in Kodi, the video playback is...messed up. All washed out, almost like every other frame is all...

nVidia drivers - no more DTS-HD or Dolby TrueHD?

Hey all, I have a HTPC with an nVidia video card - GTX 960. Been running it for at least 6 months without really any trouble, but a couple of days ago, after updating the video drivers, I realized that DTS-HD and Dolby TrueHD wasn't being passed into my receiver any longer. After a lot of...

    Weird problem with home network

Also, best to be more detailed about exactly what is hooked up how. Is the new "TWC Ubee" router your new wireless router? So it's a combined cable modem/router? Are you speed testing from your laptop while wired or wireless? If the new router is doing both your wireless and the cable modem...

Silicon Dust attempt at a DVR capable of recording protected content?

I'm a fan of this idea. Of course, I have a Ceton network tuner instead of the SD one, and I have a feeling they aren't developing this to work with any tuners but their own.

    Two computers, one Monitor/keyboard/mouse set

My laptop supports doing 3 total (through the dock at least). 1 DP, one VGA, one DVI. If I try to use the built-in screen though, it shuts the DP one down though. ElFenix, that might be what I settle for, for two of the monitors. Doesn't solve the keyboard/mouse though, so I might need a KVM...

    Two computers, one Monitor/keyboard/mouse set

So, wonder if anyone has experience doing this: I work from home and have two computers - my work laptop (Which I do all my work on, docked) and my home/gaming computer. I have 3 monitors that I use for work. My gaming PC has two monitors. I've just got a new desk, and I'm looking to save...

Dedicated PC for Plex Media Server worth it?

You don't need much to do that. Heck, I was streaming 1080p MKVs with an Intel Atom processor a couple years ago. Granted I had a dedicated video card to do the decoding of the video, but the only reason I upgraded from the thing was because using the GUI to pick what to watch was slower than I...

Is there such thing as an Ethernet output selector?

You can get a router that supports dual WAN ports; they are generally more expensive than the standard home routers, since they are designed around businesses, but they have the ability to "fallover" immediately if one of the internet connections go down, like you are doing manually. That's the...

    Cutting the cord questions

I donated to MCEBuddy just because it was so dang useful I wanted to support its development. The newer MCEBuddy can use Intel QuickSync for converting, which speeds things up considerably. But I also run it on a different computer than I record on - I just share my "recorded TV" folder on the...

Plex fans: why do you use Plex?

I use plex because I use many devices. We have an iPad, Andorid phones and tablets, a Surface Pro 3, a Roku, and a HTPC. With Plex, I have an interface that is basically the same across them all that my children are capable of using, and I don't have to keep multiple copies of my movies in...

    Motherboard Ethernet Ports

In general, Intel ones are better is the short answer. The more experience I've had with different onboard NICs, though, the more I've hated all of them. For example, if you use a Ceton InfiniTV network device with a CableCARD, you run into some really bad corruption and slowness with a lot of...

I'm tired of crappy TV resolution on my PC.. I need better quailty

I have the 2nd one personally, using with WOW. The picture is very good. Just as a warning; if you go into the CableCard on PC route, it's not precisely for the faint of heart; the Ceton Products work well, but can be very finicky to get set up and working. The network tuner for example will...
