    How does bad memory manifest itself?

    Might be useful to start recording exactly what the errors are. I'd change your CMOS battery, and see if you still get the wrong BIOS error. Since the machine seems to have trouble finishing defrag, run the HDD manufacturer's boot diagnostics and see if there are errors.

    Your best bet is to run the manufacturer's diagnostic off a boot CD. You can find them on their site. Run the Full tests - takes longer, but it will uncover any problems if the drive itself is at fault.
