How important is socket compatibility (CPU upgrade path) to you?

When I buy a new CPU/motherboard, I want them to last as long as the memory cycle at the time (for example, once I get a Coffee Lake based system, I want it to last until DDR5 reaches mainstream), so socket compatibility is something that doesn't matter for me at all.

Coffeelake thread, benchmarks, reviews, input, everything.

I would like to know that as well, and also, in motherboards that make it possible to use 1 core turbo on all cores, would that work on a non-K CPU?

Who's buying a 6 core Coffee Lake CPU? (Poll Inside)

Was planning on saving money to get the i7 8700K around early Q2 next year (most likely when I would be able to afford it and all the other parts I'm gonna need), but since my sister's PC is needing an upgrade even more badly than mine (she has a Core 2 Duo, I have a Phenom II X4), I'm gonna...

    Intel Skylake / Kaby Lake

Something like that, yeah. I intend to go with i7 8700K as soon as I can afford it and other components that I'll need, afterwards I don't intend to upgrade CPU again until a few years after DDR5 reaches mainstream or so. Until then I'll just be going with mainstream graphics cards every other...

    Intel Skylake / Kaby Lake

Posted this in another forum, may as well post it here too: People tend to upgrade GPUs faster than they upgrade CPUs, and GPUs become obsolete much faster. I rather spend a bit more on a better gaming CPU which I won't upgrade again for many years than spend more on a GPU that I'll upgrade in...

7800X isn't the only one with a 140W TDP though. The higher clocked 8c/16t 7820X has a 140W TDP as well. The 10c/20t 7900X and 12c/24t 7920X also have a 140W TDP, but these are lower clocked than the 7800X/7820X (though the 7900X has the same turbo as the 7820X).
