Anyone Else Bored With Mobile Devices?

Not just you. I've been bored with both PCs and mobile tech. Both platforms have matured and are "good enough" for many people. In the case of mobile tech, the rectangular touch screen slab for phones and tablets are what people are used to and expect nowadays. Companies don't want to...

Is a DVD/CD drive needed anymore?

Because at the time, I had several Ubuntu CDs already burnt to CD, and I hadn't figured out how to make a bootable Ubuntu USB drive. I haven't experimented with Ubuntu installed onto a USB stick for 5 years, so I don't know how far they've come. If you can install Linux from an existing...

Is a DVD/CD drive needed anymore?

When I was building ITX PCs for myself, I came to the realization that I didn't need an internal CD/DVD drive in them. Instead, I used an external USB CD/DVD drive when I needed to boot into a Linux live CD to test something. This saved me the cost of buying a CD/DVD drive for each ITX PC, and...

Why are so many people buying the crapsung galaxy s6?

I guess smartphones aren't about function anymore. Instead, they're more about style and social status.

Has the law of diminishing returns taken place the last 10 years

I'm not so sure about 2005. Maybe around 2009, when Core 2s and Phenom II/Athlon IIs were the majority of the market. That's my threshold where CPUs had enough single threaded performance and number of cores to provide "good enough" performance for general, every day tasks. And any increase in...

How do people use larger and heavier tablets?

Take a mop, hold it near the mop end, and try to lift the handle by tilting the mop. No problem right? Now hold the same mop at the handle end, so the mop is dangling at the far end away from your hand, and tilt it upward. Much harder, right? I'm trying to hold and use the tablet like this...

How do people use larger and heavier tablets?

Recently, I bought my first large tablet, a 9.7" E-Ceros Revolution Android tablet, which weights 1.3 lbs (about 600 grams). Its roughly similar in size and weight to an iPad (not iPad Air). I tried using it for a few minutes. Right away, I found the size and weight cumbersome to use compared...

What color is this dress??? (the interwebs are asploding)......

I'm comparing the same picture on the same site using 3 different computer monitors side by side and 3 different tablet screens. To me, the white/blue part of the dress is sort of a pale light blue on all 6 screens. But they're different shades of pale blue. On one screen, the blue stand outs...

Can you have too much storage?

When you have to park your car outside of your garage in order to make room for hard drives, that might be a sign that you have too much storage.

    Non-removable battery

I guess in theory, lighter and thinner = easier to handle, less of a physical and mental burden for the user, making it more desirable to the user to own and use.

What do you do with your old/outdated/replaced hardware?

If the outdated component is an entire PC, I install Linux on it and experiment with stuff like compiling code or setting up FTP/web/etc servers. I also use older PCs to performance test the software and scripts that I write. If it runs quickly, efficiently, and responsively on yesterdecade's...

Why do software programs open TCP connections with themselves?

I'm not sure. I've never had to open a socket to my own app before. The only reasons I can think of are: - The app already had port 5454 opened for other reasons. A different part of the app needs this feature, so he simply opens a socket connection to itself to get at this feature. - That...

Why do software programs open TCP connections with themselves?

For the pairs question, I think netstat doesn't distinguish when a TCP connection is being connected to the same localhost. netstat sees an outgoing TCP connection, and an incoming TCP connection, and reports both, which is why you see connections to the same host in pairs. If the connection...

    Qualcomm's overheating 810 chips?

Yep. We've had good enough computers, good enough tablets, and now we have good enough smartphones. Where do we go from here???

Have you sped up your upgrade cycle, slowed it down, or neither?

Slowed down to a standstill. Phenom X6 1100T. 16GB RAM. Samsung 830 SSD for the Linux OS. A couple of 1 TB HDDs for the data files. I'm so overloaded with computing power for my needs, I won't be upgrading my computer until it breaks.
