Update for anyone interested: I have just replaced the suspected faulty mobo with another one they shipped out and it has solved the problem - now works perfectly everytime - exactly the same mobo (Asus P5QL Pro).

No fear, manual says that worse thing will be system boot failure - which is what i got. Just tried a brand new battery and still have that problem...:\ I guess I will have to send it back...

so I tried the cmos battery from my old mobo and it actually booted 3 times in a row which is unheard of so far! Unfortunately it then went back to 1 in 2 successful boots...:\ The cmos battery that came with this new mobo was reading 2.72v and the battery from my old mobo was reading 3.04v so...

Hi VL. Thanks for the reply. PSU is Antec TruePower Trio 550W. I will try the CMOS battery from my old mobo to see if that changes anything and also try booting without the battery to see if there is any difference. Thanks again.
