    Poll: What M/B to get?

I am looking at 2. Asus CUSL2 or the Abit VP6. I know these are two very different boards. I really like to know if I buy the Abit VP6 and only put one CPU in now, will i be sorry buying it. I am kind of leary of non-intel chipsets for intel CPU's. If the CUSL2 series is the choice, then...

Intel serverworks or Via chip set

I would go with the server works based board. It is what is being used in Compaq, HP and other good quality PIII servers for a good reason! Asus has one that has built-in UW160SCSI into it. It is not cheep, but they make excellent boards. Supermicro also does make good server boards. Buy...

Quantum or Maxtor?? (update on IBM)

I would recommend Seagate or WD. The seagate ata baracuda is based on their server grade SCSI drives which is the industry standard Drives for servers. The performance difference between drives is BS in real world use. When you start getting into performance issues on servers, that is...

Upgrade motherboard now or wait for DDR/RDRAM?

Read the review on anandtech.com about the new via ddr chipset. There is virtually no performance difference on a PIII platform as most apps do not benefit from increased memory bandwidth. I would not wait for DDR or waste the money. I seems that the intel 815 chip set is the best...

    Choose wisely ?

There is nothing wrong with a PCI modem as long as you get a non-win modem. Do your self a favor and buy an US Robotics PCI Non-win modem. I would disable com 2 in the bios and manually map the PCI slot (in the Bios) to the proper IRQ (3 for com2). I would also get a 3Com 905b NIC card. It...

MSI Pro2a - need help w/ adding new and old hard drive

I would move the data from any Quantum Big foot HDD. They were some of the worst HDD ever made. I have replaced over the years at least a dozen bad "Big foot" drives.

    MSI 815EP Pro-R, Abit SA6R, or Asus CUSL2

If you are concerned with HDD perfpormance, consider a SCSI HDD. They are more reliable and faster expcially if you buy a 10RPM. alot of Professional workstations have come with SCIS HDD's because of performance issues. I would also recommend windows 2000 Pro. rock solid stable and will...

    Abit PV6

Does anyone have experience with this Duel PRocessor M/B? I am looking to build a video editing station for a friend. Or is there any other motherboards using the Via apollo Proa chipset. I have not had great luck with non-intel chips sets with intel chips,

What's an ata/66 harddrive's speed if it's connected to an ata/66 cable with a cdrom?

The proper procedure is to NEVER put a CD-Rom Drive on the same cable as your primary master HDD. It is a sloppy practice that a lot of techs take. You HDD performance will be degraded. I would go further to say that if you also have a ata 33 drive as a "D" Drive, also put that on...

    ECC support in newer mobos?

I called Intel about ECC support in the 815 chipset. It does not support it but ECC RAM will run on the board, just not using ECC. I had bought ECC Ram when I ordered some for another system I was building for a client from Crucial. I bought the ECC for $3 more which I felt was worth the...

    Chipset Recommendation and M/B

I am upgrading my system to a pIII800+ system. I would like any info people have on various chipsets. I am trying to be open minded about chipsets because I have had problems with non intel chipsets in the past. I tend to like Intel if i buy an intel processor. I am leaning towards the...
