I think it's more a matter of them wanting to use their time working on the product, not fixing a laptop. In a business it's usually much more efficient to outsource "IT Maintenance" rather than have the development staff do it on their own.

Sorry to bump such an oldie, but this happened again tonight. The apparent culprit was the cable modem and things connected to it via Ethernet. Crap. It even fried an HDMI switch, which obviously only indirectly connects.
