I had the same problem with 2x 4gb HyperX Kingston 1600 ram. I also put them in the blue sockets first and nothing happend. Then i pretty much drew the same conclusion as you, that i worked with one 4gb ram stick. Though i also tried putting the two sticks in the black slots which apparently...
